Skokie's story has always been one of resilience, community, and entrepreneurship. What began as a modest farming settlement grew into a bustling village thanks to the resourcefulness of its residents and the paths that connected it to the world beyond. At the heart of this history is Lincoln Avenue, one of the oldest roads in the area. First a Native American trail and later a stagecoach route, it carried farmers, merchants, and travelers through what is now Downtown Skokie. Lincoln Avenue quite literally paved the way for commerce, linking Skokie to Chicago and the North Shore and shaping downtown into the hub of activity it remains today.
Beginning in 1853, Evanston prohibited alcohol sales within a four-mile radius of Northwestern University, a restriction rooted in Methodist temperance ideals. The city remained “dry” until 1972, when restaurants and hotels were first allowed to serve alcohol, with retail sales following in 1984. This long-standing ban opened the door for nearby Skokie, then known as Niles Centre, to grow into a welcoming hub of taverns, bakeries, and family-run shops. By the early 1900s, Downtown Skokie was thriving as a gathering place where hospitality and independent businesses flourished, establishing a legacy of entrepreneurship that continues today.
Most storefronts in Downtown Skokie are still owned and operated by Skokie residents, carrying forward that tradition of local, family-run businesses. Today, the Downtown Skokie Merchants Collaborative (DSMC) strengthens those ties by creating opportunities for merchants to work together. Summer Thursday Nights bring extended hours, live entertainment, and family fun. And Restaurant Week offers a one-of-a-kind progressive dining experience across multiple restaurants.
Skokie is also home to cultural anchors that connect past and present. The Skokie Public Library, recognized as one of the best in the nation, is a hub for learning and innovation. The Skokie Heritage Museum preserves the village's rich past, and guided walking tours along Lincoln Avenue allow visitors to experience history right where it happened.
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, Skokie will celebrate Heritage Day, a time to reflect on the resilience of the families and shopkeepers who built their lives along Lincoln Avenue and beyond. Their entrepreneurial spirit continues through today's merchants, neighbors, and community leaders who keep Downtown Skokie vibrant.
As part of the celebration, visitors can take part in a guided walking tour that follows Lincoln Avenue and surrounding streets, bringing Skokie's history to life through the very buildings and landmarks that shaped it. From early taverns and bakeries to today's bustling mix of restaurants and shops, the tour offers a chance to experience the village's past while standing in the center of its present.
